How long can you go without your period without any adverse effects to your health?

I take oral contraceptives and my doctor said that I could take them continually not getting my period without any adverse effects aside from ocassional spotting. I just wonder if this is true as I want to have children eventually.

1. My best friend did it for about a year or two and got pregnant when she wanted to with no problems.
2. I haven't had a period since November 2006.I haven't even had any spotting at all.I haven't had any health problems whatsoever.You can still have children without having your period regularly.My sister has never had a regular period & she had a baby & didn't even know it until she was 5 months.
