What are the adverse effects of holding it when you have to go?

Tycho Brahe, the famous 16th century astronomer died after his bladder burst, when he held it in at the dinner table. What are the odds of something like this happening and what other adverse effects can result?

  2. Holding urine too long can lead to bladder infections and kidney problems.
  3. The odds are pretty slim! Unless you have a catheter that's obstructed in some way and the urine cannot flow out, the odds of your bladder bursting because you "hold it in" is extremely rare. However, by holding it in, you increase your chance of getting a UTI (urinary tract infection), because urine is an excellent place to harbour bacteria. Also, holding it in is harder on your kidneys than anything else and it will make your urine much more concentrated. Not a good thing.
